Rogers Memorial Library - Rogers Memorial Library: The Rogers Memorial Library is named after Clarissa Rogers, the mother of Harriet Jones Rogers. The latter Ms.Rogers willed her house, property and $10,000 for the creation of a library. A company was formed to execute Ms. Rogers wishes. Additionally, Edwin Post offered the Library Company shares of the property of the Southampton Academy for $31.25 per share. At that time, the Southampton Academy was located on the northwest corner of North Main Street and Job's Lane. During 1894 or 1895, the Southampton Academy was moved to the lot next door in order to make room for a newly constructed library. Construction of this historic building began in late 1895 based on plans and specifications donated by H.R. Robertson. The building was completed in January 1896. Over the past century, the Library has outgrown this building and was recently moved (in the Fall of 2000) to a new, larger facility on Windmill Lane. Location: 91 Coopers Farm Road Southampton, NY 11968 Phone: 631-283-0774 To get there: From the corner of North Main Street and Job's Lane, head west on Job's Lane. Make the second right onto Windmill Land. Head north and make the first left onto Coopers Farm Road. The libraryis on the right-hand side. Back to the top. |
