Brightwaters Introduction Brightwaters, situated in Central Suffolk County on the south shore of Long Island, is a charming village that was incorporated in 1916. The village's name, Brightwaters, is derived from the Indian term "Wohseepee", which describes the five lakes found within the village's borders. Brightwaters is divided into three sections: the Canal section, the Lakes section and the Pines section. The Canal section is the southernmost area that borders the Great South Bay. It has two miles each of shore and canal frontage. The Lakes section is located in the middle portion of the village. It has five natural spring-fed lakes. The Pines section is the northernmost area in the village. Within this area is the village's business district, post office, Village Hall and Wohseepee Park. Brightwaters shares the same rich history as that of Bay Shore. Present day Brightwaters is a result of efforts spearheaded by T.B. (Thomas Benton) Ackerson. In the early 1900's , his company, the T.B. Ackerson Construction Company, purchased a number of large estates. The Company started the development of Brightwaters in July 1907, two months after the firm purchased the Charles E. Phelps estate on May 13, 1907. Eventually a portion of the Louis Bossert Estate was added to Brightwaters. (However, the remainder of the Bossert Estate is the present day Southward Ho Country Club located in West Bay Shore.) T.B. Ackerson's goal was to create an ideal community. During this process, he desired to emulate the canals in Venice, Italy and had one excavated. He also wished to develop a farming cooperative comprised of a small group of farms which utilized the latest developments in scientific and agricultural advancements. Brightwaters also had several recreational facilities, including the Brightwaters Casino. Today's version of Brightwaters is a testament to T.B. Ackerson's vision. It is a beautiful residential community and a highly desirable place to live. To Get There: Take the LIE to Exit 54 South (Wicks Road). Continue south. Wicks Road becomes Fifth Avenue.
