Historical Sites

Since Brightwaters was a planned community, it's history is relatively recent, yet still quite interesting. You may want to plan some additional time touring the site noted below to obtain a comprehensive view of the village.

Historical Sites - The Brightwaters Canal and Pavillions

Jan Hus Memorial

The Brightwaters Canal and Pavillions - T.B. Ackerson envisioned a community with a canal like those found in Venice, Italy. Between 1909 and 1910, the canal was excavated by the Bay Dredging and Contracting Company of Jersey City, NJ. The dredging cost the T.B. Ackerson Construction Company sixteen cents per cubic yard. When completed, the entire effort cost $120,000, which included dredging, bulkheading and beautification.

At one time, when the area was less populated, the land along each side of the canal was used as take-off and landing strips for airplanes. Today, many beautiful homes line the streets that parallel the canal and boats are docked in the water.

To get there: From the intersection of Windsor and Orinoco, head south to South Country Road (also known as Rt. 27A or Montauk Highway). Make a right turn onto South Country Road . Head west about 1/8th of a mile. The canal and pavillions are on the left. Back to the top.
